Social media marketing firm Beevolve conducted a study that examined more than 36 million Twitter profiles, and they came up with some interesting findings.
It's been well established that women make up the majority of social media users. While the exact numbers are difficult, if not impossible to nail down, as many as 64 percent of Facebook users, 58 percent of Twitter users and a whopping 97 percent of Pinterest users are female. Even if you take the more conservative estimates, then the numbers still come out to approximately 54/53/80, respectively.
To put it simply, women have a large presence on social media.
The Beevolve study takes an interesting look at Twitter users. One of the things it found was that if you boiled down those 36 million Twitter profiles into one "average" Twitter user, that person would look like this:
The average Twitter user
- American
- Female
- Between 15-25 years old
- following 102 accounts
- 590 tweets
These can be valuable numbers to marketers. They only underscore the fact that social media is a platform which is dominated by women, and any company marketing to women would be well served to not ignore this valuable tool for reaching this large segment of the population.
