By now, most of us have seen the movie Magic Mike. Whether you went to “help out a friend” or to give in to a guilty pleasure, women all around the country made it to the theater opening weekend. Sex has always been a big selling point, almost guaranteeing a response no matter what industry. However, as of late, sex has been selling to women more than usual. It started with the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon and now with Magic Mike.
Magic Mike’s opening weekend brought in $40 million with over 70 percent of the attendees being women. It seems like director Steven Soderbergh was on to something by marketing this movie toward women, and they paid their respects! Some of the slogans and marketing plugs for the movie were “Tell your boyfriend you are going to a book club” and “Welcome to the bachelorette party”.
While Magic Mike made strides at the box office, how did it do in your group of friends or co-workers? Do you guys think it objectified men in the same way women strippers are objectified? Do you believe it was just some light-hearted fun? Whatever you think, the movie has Hollywood talking about marketing toward women and we like that.
