There is something to be said for creating social media buzz… but what about creating fake buzz? Here is an example of when a faux social media campaign becomes a press release.
Aliza Licht, DKNY PR girl, created a video tracking made-up tweets about a made-up party to celebrate a new DKNY London flagship location. She even involved some high-profile people like NBA player Carmelo Anthony and Elle’s Joe Zee to do some “tweeting”. Throughout the video, the hashtag #UK2012 is used and the buzz spreads out to Facebook, Tumblr and Pinterest. Thousands of people have now seen this faux campaign in a matter of days.
The genius behind it is that it mimics everyday life- you hear something, then tweet it or Facebook about it and before you know it everyone has heard the news through retweets, replies, and comments. Even though the video is a spoof, the publicity and the new store opening is real. Plus, look who’s talking about it… guess we are even contributing to the buzz- Aliza’s one smart woman.
