Social Media Day

Social media has changed how we communicate with people and how often. From things like posting pictures of our delicious breakfast to staying connected with loved ones across the globe, we can utilize social networking sites in any way we choose. We are more connected than we could have imagined and now there’s a day to celebrate it.

In 2010, Mashable launched June 30th as Social Media day. They wanted to set aside a day “to celebrate the ways in which social media has changed our lives for the better.” Since its launch, we have been introduced to Instagram, Vine and Google+. These platforms have helped us stay connected with friends and family, but social media has changed our lives outside of our personal relationships. It’s also impacted our lives as a consumer.

With these new modes of communication, we’ve also been introduced to new marketing techniques. Some companies have launched accompanying mobile applications for these communication platforms. For example, you can edit your pictures in at least five different photo editing apps before posting them to Instagram or Facebook. Brands and blogs have even launched their own social media accounts after taking note of their popularity. Michael Kors markets to women by showcasing their newest collections on Instagram, and Rolling Stone previews their latest magazine covers on Vine. The integration of social media and marketing has become crucial to marketing to women and building relationships with customers.

Mashable’s Social Media day celebrates these connections with companies and friends and it’s just around the corner. Although the big event will be in New York City, Mashable created online meetups worldwide so on Sunday, June 30th, we can all revel in the ways social media has kept us connected. Check if your community has a meetup already set up or create one of your own at http://www.meetup.com/Mashable/.
